National Flag & National Anthem

The national flag of the Philippines has a white triangle on the left. On either side tapering off to the left are two stripes, the top on blue, the bottom on red. The white triangle contains three five point stars and a sun with eight rays.

The sun symbolises freedom and its eight rays represent the first eight provinces that revolted against Spanish colonial rule.

The stars symbolise the three geographical divisions of the Philippines: Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

The blue stripe stands for the equality and unity of the people. The red stripe (placed on top in wartime) symbolises the readyness of the Philippinos to fight to the death for their country.

On 12 June 1898, from the balcony of his house in Caviote, General Emilio Aguinaldo declared the independance of the Philippines. On this day, the Philippines national flag was raised and the national anthem played for the first time.

In the form of a march, the Marcha National Filipina anthem was composed by Julian Felipe and the words were written by Jose Palma.
